isn't 'sumimasen' closer to english 'excuse me' than 'i'm sorry'? i linked 'sorry' with 'goumennasai'. Am I wrong?

Yeah it's close BUT not the same...you can use sumimasen for apoligiezing also.

it can be used in several ways, how i learned it in Japanese class is sumimasen can me "I'm sorry" but more used for if you bump into someone or something and also used if you need to get someones attention.
