The Shanbehzadeh's Ensemble offers a unique aspect of hypnotic dances and
traditional music from the Persian Gulf and more precisely from the unkown region of
Boushehr.
The main instruments include the Neyanban (Iranian bagpipe), Neyjoti (double flute),
Dammam (dual faced percussion), Zarbetempo (percussion), traditional flute, Senj (local
type of cymbals) and Boogh (horns).
Founded in 1990, this Ensemble directed by Saeid Shanbehzadeh delighted audiences in
Iran, Europe and North America with the hypnotic rhythms and melodies of this amazing
music.
TRADITIONAL MUSIC FROM BOUSHEHR
Boushehr is situated far of the centre of Iran, near the south-west coast of the Persian Gulf.
This city lives at the rythm of a tradition and a culture different from the North, especially from
the region of Teheran.
The history of Boushehr is the symbol of a fishing village which has become a strategic war
area.
Down the centuries, Arabian, African, Indian, Armenian and Jewish populations integrated
the city and participated to the local trade.
The music from the city of Boushehr arose from the unique combination of Persian, Arab,
African and Indian traditions that came together centuries ago in this southern Iranian cultural
crossroad on the Persian Gulf.
This diversity results from the wealth of local traditions in which music plays a vital role in all
aspects of life: religion, work, social events, drama, music therapy and trance.
The traditional musical ensemble of Saied Shanbezadeh is available
for concerts, festivals and workshops.

Saeid Shanbehzadeh
Neyanbânn, Neydjofti, Traditional
Dances
Saied is a Neyanban and Neyjofti virtuoso but also an
amazing dancer. He is often invited to participate to
concerts with recognized artists as Billy Cobham.
In 2001 he co-operated with the French
Montalvo/Hervieu Company in creating and touring with
the "Babelle Heureuse" show, which was performed
more than two hundred times in France, Europe and
Brazil.
At the age of twenty he created his own traditional music group, the Shanbezadeh's
Ensemble which won the first prize at the Fajr Festival in Tehran in 1990. At the same time
he also began to conduct research and write about southern Iranian music in Iranian
periodicals. His research on the ethnomusicology of the region led him to collect many
different types of local music and create sound archives for this music. As a result of his
research and his concerts he is now a nationally and internationally known musician.
In 1996 he was invited to spend a semester at the University of Toronto. Two years later, he
was named professor and director at the House of Culture and Music of the island of Kish
(Iran).
In 2007 he was invited again by "La Cité de La Musique" of Paris to teach dance, singing and
music.
Today, Saied animates workshop in schools in partnerships with 'le theatre de Chaillot, "le
musée du louvres" and "la compagnie Montalvo/ hervieu".
Naghib Shanbehzadeh
Tombak, Zarbetempo
Young skilled percussionist, Naghib began playing music in Boushehr and Kish with his
father at the age of 3 years old. He learnt traditional percussions from the south of Iran
(Dammâm, Doholgap, Pipè, Kesser, Tempo) and classical ones (Zarb). Since the age of 10,
he plays concerts with famous musicians as Billy Cobham, Manu Codja or Matthieu
Donarier.
Now, he studies occidental percussions at the « Conservatoire de Créteil ». Habib Meftahbousheri
He was born in a musical family: his father, his grandfather and his uncle were great
musicians who played Dammam and Neyanban in Boushehr. The Dammam instrument
continued to be played thanks to this family, which always played it with impressive skill.
Habib is one of the best players of Dammam in Iran today.
