Papa John DeFrancesco Trio & David "Fathead" Newman

Here's the Papa John DeFrancesco Trio & David "Fathead" Newman performing at the 25th Annual Gibson Blues and Jazz Festival, in Glendale, Arizona. This was recorded on April 13, 2008.

Papa John plays an exceptional organ solo starting at about the 6:20 mark in the video.

The day was quite windy and I had no tripod available, therefore the video is shaky at times and there is occasional wind noise.

Also, the video was too long for YouTube (10 minute max) so I was forced to edit out about 1 1/2 minutes of the guitar solo. My apologies, the part I had to remove was marvelous, as well.

Nice! Papa John has such a great groove.

And it sure does look like son Joey is sneaking up behind his back with a camcorder at around 8 min. Maybe Joey is trying learning a few licks? :-)

Joey WAS videotaping his father with David "Fathead" Newman. But Papa John would deny that Joey could learn anything from him at this point. He calls Joey "the wizard, with the little pointy hat and everything."

It's hard to deny that one! Papa John is a great organist... but Joey... Wow!

Yeah, I know. Joey is the best living jazz organ player right now when it comes to handling the keyboard. Regarding foot pedal work I would say that Barbara Dennerlein is the best without question.

Anyhow, there are a number of players that have mastered the difficult art of making the organ swing without a bass player, and 'Papa' is for sure one of them :-)
