A favorite shape-note 'rouser' as sung at the 14th Annual Harrod's Creek Shape Note Singing, Brownsboro, Kentucky. Singers from Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Massachusetts, Texas, Canada, and South Korea came together with Kentucky singers for two days of all-day singing, with traditional dinner on the grounds.

  • of course this song was made famous around the world by being on the soundtrack of the motion picture "Cold Mountain" ...the anthem of this movie was a particularly haunting and sad tune and made one think of how many people to this day die in vain because of war...

  • @tscholent Right. The song you call 'the anthem of this movie' is another Sacred Harp tune, Idumea. By the way, people who liked these songs might check out some of the other Sacred Harp songs posted on my channel and elsewhere on YouTube. There are many equally moving and inspiring songs among them.

  • Thanks so much for posting this video... I stumbled on Sacred Harp by accident, and I'm totally fascinated by the way it works and the performance... just everything. I wish that it was more popular up north, I can't imagine how awesome it must be to be in a group like this one.

  • @Fishcalledzig You might be astonished at how popular Sacred Harp singing is 'up north.' There are many active singers and events in places like Minneapolis, Chicago and downstate Illinois, southern Wisconsin, Southern Michigan, Indiana both northern and Southern, various places in New England, Pensylvania, elsewhere. If you want to check for events near you, go to the national website, fasola.org You'll find all kinds of useful information there.

  • What is this movement with the hands?

  • @Lili8015 The person standing in the center is leading the song. Other singers may beat the time with their hands as well, much as one might tap a foot to keep time with the music. Since singers sit in a 'hollow square,' not everyone has a good view of the leader, so this custom helps the singers to stay together, as well. By the way, many or most of the singers at these events take their turn in the center, leading a song of their choice.

  • This is pure singing praise to the Lord.

  • Farewell, vain world! i'm going home!

My savior smiles and bids me come,

And i don't care to stay here long!

    Sweet angels beckon me away,

To sing god's praise in endless day,

And i don't care to stay here long!

    (chorus:)

Right up yonder, christians, away up yonder,

O, yes my lord, for i don't care to stay here long.
