Dave Ramsey - Credit Card/Debt Collectors are SCUM

My hero, Dave Ramsey, tells of abusive practices and the violation of Federal law incorporated by debt collectors - particularly credit card debt collectors. Most people do not know that they have rights guaranteed to them by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and debt collectors knowingly and habitually break these laws in order to frighten them into paying.

IT IS NOT AGAINST THE LAW TO OWE MONEY!

Do not allow yourself to be lied to (example: "You're going to go to jail if you don't pay this" is one of their favorites!) or treated without the dignity you deserve.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS UNDER THE FDCPA:

Collectors can NOT call you before 8 am or after 9 pm

Collectors can NOT threaten to have you arrested or charged with a crime if you dont pay

Collectors can NOT continue to call after you have indicated you want them to stop (record your conversation with them, tell them you ARE recording it, write the date and time down in a journal, and follow up with a certified letter stating they may no longer call.)

Collectors can NOT call friends, family members or colleagues repeatedly in order to get you to pay (they may call your acquaintances ONCE in order to track you down and may NOT mention that you owe money or give ANY information that would lead someone to believe that they are attempting to collect a debt.)

This guy is a d bag I am a ccdebt collector and have been for a while and non of those stories about threatening to take away there toys or any of the other stuff he was talking about is true cause if that was how we did it then yes we would be scum but we try to work with the customer to get there card current so they stop all the negatives of being in collections plus the people who end up sueing the collection agency for harassment normally win the case for the amout of the debt but part 1/2

Part 2 of 2.. So before you go on and on about people just not paying there bills. I wouldn't wish this apon you for anything in the world. But my bills weren't paid because I was busy learning how to walk again, having to catheterize myself 4 times a day, and giving myself injections of antibiotics 3 times a day because I developed an infection, probably from the nature of my job which causes me to take care of other people and exposes me to more bacteria. I'm not even at the tip of the iceberg

@mastershredder2009. art 1 of 2. Havn't you  taken into account that some that stop paying there bills is somehow due to a nature that is beyond their control. I'm a registered nurse that has dedicated my life to helping other people. Almost one year ago I suffered from a spinal cord injury and had to take some time off of work. I did have insurance including disability insurance, but while I was off and recieving 50% of my normal wages I was racking up on medical thousands of dollars of bills

@mastershredder2009, Dave's not disputing that the money's owed or that collectors should collect. The problem is the rampant abuse & law-breaking in the industry. Our family went thru a terrible period of deep underemployment and we found the bill collectors to be appalling MORE OFTEN THAN NOT. In fact only 1 person talked to me reasonably. The rest would use all of the tactics, and more, that Dave describes here. We WANTED to pay. Were we stupid to borrow? Absolutely- but it didn't help then!

Hey, its really simple. Stop blaming your faults on everybody else but yourself and pay your bills. The only scumbags are the one's that keep collectors employed by not paying their bills in the first place. Seems to me an

easy solution. No unpaid bills, No collector calls.

Rent or utilities got paid that month? When I had to collect on bad debt I would be honest, this company and it's owners will sue you, they will garnish your wages and it will take years for the judgement to fall off. Show up to court, but the judge will say.. Did u sign this? You'll say yes and then we garnish your wages... Honesty not bullying works!

I don't think ALL collectors are scum but the ones who continually harass such as in the cases you mentioned are something maybe worse than scum! I worked with a guy who threatened to go get the police involved... Truth is it didn't make anyone pay up! I myself have been a payday loan collector.. I hated my job, realized the company I worked for were bottom feeders because the people who turn to those type of loans don't understand the whole they are digging!
