MONUMENTAL CEMETERY OF THE CERTOSA OF BOLOGNA.

The municipal cemetery was established in 1801 reusing existing structures of the Certosa of San Girolamo of Casara, founded in the middle of the '300 and abolished 1797 by Napoleon. The strong Passion of the nobility and of the bourgeoisie in the construction of family tombs transformed the Certosa in a real "Open Air Museum", stage of the Grand Italian Tour: The visited Byron, Dickens, Mommsen, Stendhal. In particular the cloister third (or of the Chapel) is a cycle of considerable neo-classical inspiration and symbolism view; perhaps unique in the world are the tombs painted in tempera and those implemented in stucco and canary grass. In the Church are to signal the triptych of the Passion of Christ, the work of Bartolomeo Cesi (1556-1629) and the wooden choir inlaid restored by Biagio de Marchi in 1538 after the fire caused by were of Charles V.In evidence are the paintings dedicated to episodes of the life of Christ, the size of about 450x350 inches, which were commissioned in the middle of the '600 to two Sirani, Giovan Andrea and Elisabetta, Francesco Gessi, Giovanni Maria Galli from Bibbiena, Lorenzo Pasinelli, Domenico Maria and the economic Neapolitan Nunzio Rossi. Performers include include: Giacomo De Maria, Lorenzo Bartolini, Giovanni e Massimiliano Putti, Alessandro Franceschi, Pietro Tenerani, Cincinnato Baruzzi, Carlo Chelli, Giovanni Duprè, Vincenzo Vela, Giovan Battista Lombardi, Augusto Rivalta, Diego Sarti, Tullo Golfarelli, Leonardo Bistolfi, Giorgio Kienerk, Silverio Montaguti, Giuseppe Romagnoli, Pasquale Rizzoli, Ercole Drei, Giacomo Manzù, Luciano Minguzzi, Farpi Vignoli, Bruno Saetti and many others.Between the artists who have done the painted tombs include Peter Fancelli, Flaminio Minozzi, Antonio Basoli and Pelagio Palagi. A decisive role in the charm that distinguishes the Certosa di Bologna by other cemeteries derives from European monumental complex articulation of the spaces. From the original nucleus Conventual unravel loggias, salt and arcades that recreate glimpses and environments that refer to the town of live.

The findings in the Etruscan necropolis discovered during the archaeological excavations coordinated by Ing.
