Living in abysmal poverty and utter destitution is not a virtue in Islam.Among the principles and practices that Islam lays out, to overcome poverty, to protect the disadvantaged and to achieve justice are:The institution of Zakat, (wealth tax), The prohibition of Riba (usury) , The establishment of Faraid (inheritance) laws , The encouragement of Waqfs (endowments) , Sadaqah (charity).
In this video are two concrete examples of Malaysias poverty eradication effort.
The first is the Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) project; designed after the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. As Malaysia's largest microcredit programme, its primary goal is to provide interest free loans based on trust to the poorest of the poor especially women--- to enable them to engage in an ethical, productive economic activity that would become a self-sustaining source of income for them and their families.
The second would be the massive, organized scheme to provide land to the landless through the Federal Land Authority (FELDA) and to raise rural incomes.
