Abstract-

The City of Durham Solid Waste Management department is committed to integrating applications to improve collections operations. Solid Waste management knew that the only way to meet City Wide budgetary goals was to use GIS technology to increase efficiency. Sold Waste decided to
• In-Source recycling collections,
• Establish Yard Waste Routes,
• Decrease Garbage collections routes,
• Bulky collections and white goods services.

Routing software, handheld data capture devices, iMaps, and Microsoft SharePoint has enabled the solid waste management department to meet the 7% decrease in budget and improve efficiencies inside the department. With the introduction of new technology it was necessary to redesign business processes, to train, and to engage the workforce. This process took place over a one year period continues to generate the operations efficiencies and the cost savings needed year after year. The presentation will outline the route creation process and integrating various systems and vendor relationship manager within local government.
