Part 4 of 5 - Behind the scenes footage of the San Jose State Spartans (Division 1 team), going on the road to face UTEP, while still seeking their first win of the season, as well as their Head Coach, Fitz Hill, seeking HIS first win as a collegiate Head Coach. I was hired that year as a "creative video specialist", to produce highlight videos of games, as well as mini-docs. This video (compressed and split up into five parts for the Internet) immediately became a recruiting tool that Coach Hill used in order to solicit top high school and J.C players to the school. Unfortunately, Fitz Hill, who at the time was one of only three D1 African American coaches, didn't last long at the school (three years I believe), but Dick Tomey has them back on track.

  • Fitz Hill was the WORST coach in SJS in the past 50 years...

  • How do you know that? Where you on the "inside"? Or did you just watch the games? He had a roster that didn't have a lot of talent...but he was a hell of a motivator, and if you actually watch all 5 parts of this mini-doc, you'll see that.

  • It was a VERY difficult season. This mini-doc that I shot and edited was our first win of the season, and Hill's first win as a head coach, so it's a silver lining in an otherwise dismal season. The next week,we went to Hawaii, and Carlson was watching this video, alone, right before the team bus took everyone to the stadium. I remember thinking (I hope he doesn't get overconfident.)I don't think it was the video, but he had a terrible game and we got crushed.

But the Spartans are back now!

  • charmyer, you're basically defending what Travmeister said; all he said was Fitz could recruit (AND HE COULD, '06 TEAM was full of Fitz's players)... besides that, Trav ripped Fitz just like you and Fymious.

  • Does anyone have some Deonce Whitaker highlights on tape that they can put on You Tube. I would love to see his leagacy survive. By the way, Travmeister through out the stats, bottom line was Fritz Hill was terrible. He sounds like an idiot when he is trying to motivate the team. He says " We cal the right play" YEA RIGHT! " Your just not executing" Great way to pump up your guys. It's amazing he was a Doctor.

  • I wish we had the 2000 offense with the 2008 defense. But perhaps we can get back to the 2006 form with the help of Terry Malley.

  • I knew some of the players from Fitz Hill's team. I even got to meet Fitz hill himself.

  • Sadly,it looks like I was right about Hill...he recruited well, but NOT students.

Tomey's last two classes have so small due to loss of scholarships because Hill's players dropped out at such a high rate...Hill hurt SJS much more then helping it.

  • and he had pleanty of talent that year, most of the starters came back from the 7-5 2000 squad. every media count in the country had them preseason to finish 2nd or 3rd in the WAC.

  • Fymious is right, please, this was ONE win of just three that year. and let's see...In 2003 Fitz led them to three wins again, 2004 two wins...so no, he couldn't coach or gameplan. First off, UTEP was just as bad as San Jose State that year. But yes, like Fymious said, Fitz could recruit, he got players like QB Adam Tafralis, James Jones (Now one of the leading receivers on the Packers), and LB Matt Castelo...not to mention game attendance was an all-time low at SJSU with Fitz's tenure.

  • I agree Baldwin was a great coach and offensive coordinator. Fitz Hill's play calling was terrible. He also did not play Deonce Whitaker enough. Think of the talent he had;Whitaker, rasheid Davis, edel sheppard, kendrick Straling, Jamar Julien. Man they had a team. It is a shame the 2000 team didnt get into a bowl game. I loved that team. I was at the game when they beat TCU with tomlinson on national TV. I miss seeing Whitaker play. He was the shit!!!!!
