Drake's Well, in Titusville, Pa, has a full size demonstration of how one steam engine ran all the pumps in an oil field, through a series of bars, links, hinged uprights.

  • It is a steam engine just got back from there Because of our hunting camp near by and watched them start it it is wood powered

  • This is a great vid! But that's not a steam engine, it's a gas-powered Olin "hit and miss" engine. It has a governor on it that injects a fuel-air mixture into the cylinder when the flywheel slows and ignites it, spinning up the flywheel for a few turns before firing again. Thus it "hits" once and then "misses" for 3 or 4 revolutions. Amzing and clever piece of machinery. The pumps it is operating are not pumping active wells, but rather just some recirculated oil for display purposes.

  • Looked like that thing that willy wonka took everyone on for a ride.

  • Fascinating. Thanks for posting this.
