Requested video from several people who asked how to join-up with their horses. The Join-Up method was orginally founded by Monty Roberts.

"Traditional methods aim to teach the horse to DO AS I SAY and involve the use of pain and intimidation, but Monty focuses on communion with the horse, rather than domination. "For centuries, humans have said to horses, 'You do what I tell you or I'll hurt you,' I'm saying that no one has the right to say, 'you must' to an animal or to another human, Monty said."

SIGNS TO REMEMBER:
-Inner Ear Turned Towards You
-Mouthing/Licking
-Tongue In and Out
-Snorting

IMPORTANT NOTES:
-time an dpatince are key
-when you have started a join-up, finish till the end
-join-ups range from 20mins to several hours or longer depending on the horse
-no treats used to get the horse to follow you or do what you do
-petting as a reward
-try to keep aquare with the horse and dont let him/her stop until they start showing signs of wanting to join-up with you
-can drive the horse with lunge whip, lead rope, or hands. (i used a whip to drive in this video)
-NEVER hit or touch the horse if using a whip or lead line

  • Thank you for the reply. I watched the video and wow I will try those things for sure but what is the fingers behind the ears?

  • @ryangir its in the other vid i mentioned

  • I just bought a horse after not having horses for many years so I have a bit of nerves. Only had her a few days do you have any ideas to get my confidence back? Also I cant work her to join up yet as she hit her knee in the trailer coming to the new barn. Any thoughts of something else I can try until she is better? I also find she is testing me with her old owner who was a man she was very still leading and never pulled on him with me she tries to push me with her head not sure what to do?

  • @ryangir def try the join up once shes good :) as far as the pushing just make her stop if she tries jerk a little on the lead rope its not abusive in any way as long as its not too hard, but too soft wont get her attention. even make her back up if its real bad. also theres a vid i hav up here called Banjos Training #1 something like that, look for it and watch, those aree a few things you can do, mainly try the fingers behind the ears. good luck :)

  • ok i tried this today and she did all the signs, inner ear, licking/chewing, droping head, and turning her head toward me. but when i stoped and she did also, i turned adn she wouldn't come in, she would stand there licking and chewing? should i put her on a lunge line next time? we tryed this for like an hr

  • @TequilaSunriseProduc sure try a lunge maybe even coax her just a bit, that should work and if it does slowly over time try without one? thatd be my best guess. im no trainer but thats my opinion haha

  • This video was really helpful. The first time I did this with him though it didnt really work lol because he was already following me around is that ok but like u said to keep at it and I did and he soon realised what I was trying to get him to do. :)

  • This is what i do with my horses! it works really well i even tried it with other peoples horses!:):):)

  • ive tried doing this with the horse i ride but she wont "go away", like she keeps coming back to me but im sure she doesnt have my trust and that stuff...what do i do?

  • tequila, if the horse does not join with you right away, slowly weave yourself in front of the horse with your eyes looking at their shoulder.

Keep doing this and the horse will follow, I promise.

  • One thing I noticed that you did is continue to drive the horse with the same amount of energy on your part. If you want a firm join-up you have to let your energy level decrease at the moment of join-up and then follow-up, turning your back at a 45 degree angle.

Thus allowing the horse a chance to choose to come to you without the threat of you facing him down.

Try that next time, your join-up will be stronger.

  • awesome video! I want to try this with my horse, but I have a few questions, sorry not trying to be a bother! some people hav already asked these questions, but can you do this without a round pen? We have a big outdoor arena, would that be ok? and do I actually hav to keep my horse going at a canter? if it takes a few hours I dont want him getting over heated....could I do it in sessions over a few days or would that not work? plus is this best to do in the summer? thank you! and srry! :)

  • Very nice video. How much time takes de join up sesion? I have to keep the horse cantering or trotting? Thank you.

  • I have a little pony that is very stubborn and kind of skiddish, he is terrified of whips, just seeing them makes him tense right up, we have a round pen that is all grass so its hard to get any horse to concentrate any ideas?

  • hey, my horse is really pushy and bites and just walks all over him and no matter what is do he keeps doing it when i ride him he never listens aswel would you think this would help??

  • Thanks you so much, i have a horse that my friend wants me to train for her while she trains her own. But first i need to gain trust and as soon as i go back i'll remember to tape it and put it up ! Thank you so much !

I hope you and your horse Banjo are doing good thanks :) .
