An old folk song about the Papineau Rebellion and the young men who fled to the United States afterward to avoid arrest. The song was actually written in 1842 by Antoine Gérin-Lajoie. The historical meaning of the rebel sons in a foreign country has been subsumed by the sense of longing imparted for all who yearn for their homes. An Acadian version is called Un Acadien Errant. I heard this version learned this version from Ian and Sylvia in the 1960s.
