I remixed this fantastic Gladys Knight's song creating initially a duet between James & Gladys, then adding all The Funk Brothers.

What do you think? I still think this is one of the best & funkiest James Jamerson's basslines.

  • Actually this isnt Jamerson at all. Bob Babbit played bass on this song. Jamerson played on the Marvin Gaye version.

  • @smarzinski103 please...

  • Nice playing but you didn't fool me, this is not Jamerson playing, the tone is a dead giveaway.

  • @django772 i didn't mean to fool you. i did not play this one, i'm not a bass player. this is the bassline played on the SITSOM cd by i don't know who. cheers

  • @django772 oh, obviously the second part is played by jamerson.

  • i'm actually listening to GLADYS!!! she's awesome. this bass and her voice could have been a song in itself.

  • @django772 It's Will Lee AFAIK

  • "Sorry I can't hear it"? So are you implying that some random guy just played bass here? It's either Jamerson or Babbitt, there's no doubt about that. This is from the Standing in the Shadows of Motown bonus disc, which is basically a Jamerson highlight reel with a couple Babbitt tracks.

And so it follows that you're saying that some guy on YouTube has a closer tone to Jamerson than Jamerson or Babbitt (I know who you're talking about, by the way).

Ok, I give up, you win - lol...

  • @echo1434 Sorry you can't hear it. It's not even close to his tone. Playing is good, though. Check out JamersonsHook youtube channel. Now that guy has the tone.

  • @django772

Huh? This is classic Jamerson tone, with that deep thud and hardly any treble. Almost everything he recorded in the mid '60s has a sound similar to this!

(There are plenty of isolated and instrumental Funk Brothers tracks on here to demonstrate this.)

  • @smarzinski103

This is Jamerson... Babbitt has a pretty good list of all the big songs he did on his web site, and he never claimed this one.

And well, my ears, as well all sources I've seen indicate that this is Jamerson.

    Anyway, nice mix!

  • @TheMastFravekator Sorry, was thinking of midnight train to georgia. nobodys perfect!

  • Good playing though :-)
