Lets face it: "The Catcher in the Rye," by J. D. Salinger, is bleak. Its about a 16-year-old guy named Holden Caulfield who is undergoing treatment in a mental hospital. Holdens encounters with society tell the story of a teenager who cant find his place in a pretty ugly world.

But theres more to "The Catcher in the Rye" than teen angst and urban sleaze. Salinger presents Holden as a study in the self-contradictions of adolescence. By the end of "The Catcher in the Rye," Salinger gives Holden some reason for hope—and some hope for growing up. The world, Holden Caulfield comes to see, might not be quite so bad as he thought.

  • Holden Caulfield is the biggest phony in this book. I hope he lives in a dorm with Ackley for the rest of his life.

  • Best "catcher" commentary on YouTube.

  • What in the bloody fuck does 2 have to do with anything in this book?

  • 2??? WTF

  • I see the "corruption of adulthood" everyday. I'm sick of reviving druggies and alcoholics and protecting and comforting criminals and louts of all kinds. Almost as much as I hate 'adults' who turn a blind eye to it. I kinda feel like the catcher in the rye. Only I'm stopping adults who disgust me from going over the cliff! I'd rather let them go.

  • He's not having a "mental breakdown." I wonder if you've ever seen one? Why do people find him annoying? He's a hero dipping his toe into the horrible reality of being an adult and trying to resist. I like to think that he's still in the rye. I wish I were. Good video though!

  • im on the 15th chapter and maybe im just not much of an intellect because H.Claufield is very annoying. i'm waiting for the book to start peaking my interest. hopefully the following chapters do that. I'd like for someone to explain to me what's good about the book. i want to like it, but holden is just so annoying.

  • Trash review.

  • @bananasofcourse It is tragic that you choose as the icon for hypocrisy the one character that exposes it in others, namely the reader in many instances. If you criticize him, at least cite examples of his hypocritical behavior instead of jumping to short-sighted conclusions about him. I find your perception of him telling, and not unlike the shallow, mindless characters that he criticizes in the story. Holden's complaints and emotions are not just valid, but noble.

  • @alphalux I like this book a lot, but the main character represents what saddens me about people--hipocrisy.

  • @bananasofcourse The fact that you truly feel this way is what saddens me about society. Fortunately, there is hope; and some people really do understand this book. They are changed by it for the better. Please consider revisiting this book from a different perspective.
