SAVANNAH — Police Chief Michael G. Wilkie and his department have been named the 2010 recipients of the Dr. Curtis E. McClung /Motorola Award of Excellence presented by the Georgia Association Chiefs of Police (GACP). The award, which is co-sponsored by the Motorola Corporation, is given annually to a deserving agency in recognition of its use of an innovative program in the pursuit of law enforcement excellence. Chief Wilkie and representatives of his department were presented with this prestigious award Monday, July 26, 2010.

The Acworth Police Department was selected the winner for its Covering the Bases community outreach program. The Police Department facilitated the efforts needed to raise the funds so that a special needs ball field could be built in Acworth. The field is a synthetic rubberized baseball diamond playing surface that provides a safe and accessible area for children with special needs to participate in organized sporting activities. After the construction of the new playing field, personnel from the department have volunteered as coaches at the new complex and continue to raise funds for the maintenance of the field.

This prestigious award is named after Dr. Curtis McClung of Columbus, who is credited with bringing Georgia's law enforcement community into the modern era while also assisting the GACP in its pursuit of excellence, especially with respect to management training. Honorable mentions in this award category were bestowed upon the Carrollton Police Department, Chief Joel Richards; and the Cobb County Department of Public Safety, Director Mickey Lloyd.
