Its running on the RAM. Restart and the PC wont work

everything will still work if you disconnect the HD while the computer is still running everything is just cached on your ram. take out the ram

maybe he forgot that there was a usb jump drive in the back.
maybe when he was re formatting he formatted the jump drive.
he said linux right?
well most linux users boot from other media at some point.
im thinkning he forgot that a thumb drive was plugged in with an OS in it.
