The question this week is: Do you believe that food addictions exist? Why or why not?

My opinion is that addiction to anything can exist as a coping mechanism for stress, but that "food addiction" is not in an of itself a disorder or something that can be handled in a 12-step program like a drug addiction or an eating disorder.

Just my thoughts. Oh, and a bunch of my dad's! :D

  • you are in a good way but instead of thinking in simple stress just think about trauma, think for example in a war veteran , or a girl suffering sexual abuse for years by his father, and there you have real traumatic situations that could last for years and could lead to real addictions, so food, drugs, sex, alcohol could be a copy mechanism to self-treat the trauma, ptsd, depression etc.

  • All addiction is, is a maladaptive coping skill. If we look at drugs and alcohol, which people will readily admit that you can be addicted to - the hard part isnt the physical part. Thats over in 5 days. The hard part is the emotional part. Just as in food addiction. So fine, if you say there is no "food addiction" than I think we need to redefine the word addiction. Cuz Ive been there, and it exists in me just as drug and alcohol addiction (emotional not physical) exists in my clients.

  • it's hard for me to imagine to be bored - ever! I think, feeling bored means to feel a deprivation of a need of ... e.g. friends, conversation, love, inner satisfaction, success ... so, this deprivation causes a certain stress level, that your mind has to deal with. I usually crave for sweets, when I'm sitting at my computer, knowing I will have to spend a long time working on that thing, that will not lead to success anyway ....

  • o.m.g.... i have so much to catch up on! not only is Shanti on this channel but Natalie, too!! wonderfulness!! XD

  • I agree that I overeat when I am stressed but would you agree that we overeat more purely out of boredom?

  • Thanks girl great video! you dads messege is so true! thanks for sharing with all of us !!

  • I want to see the rest of what your dad has to say!

  • your dad is amazing. i'd love to hear more from him

  • Discussions of addiction always seem to center around what the person is addicted to.

I think it is possible that some people simply have an addictive type personality. If you took away the booze or whatever, they would just find something else like food, video games or weird religious cults to get a dependence upon.

Again, such personalities might be innate, or as your dad suggests, be rooted in suppression of stresses.
