Elizabeth I & Mary Stuart - The Meeting That Never Was

In reality, we know of no meeting between Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots, however it has often been depicted on film for dramatic effect - It certainly makes for a compelling scene. I have used scenes from 'Mary of Scotland' (1936 -- Katherine Hepburn as Mary, & Florence Eldridge as Elizabeth), 'Mary Queen of Scots (1971 -- Vanessa Redgrave as Mary & Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth), and also scenes from 'Elizabeth I' (2005 - Barbara Flynn as Mary & Helen Mirren as Elizabeth).

I'm directing a version of Schiller's 'Mary Stuart' for a production in Berkshire, England in March next year (2008) addicted to my research, loving Antonia Fraser etc - and this was fab!!

Poor Mary, she was a victim of ruthless, ambitious politicians and other monarchs around her. They used her as a scapegoat to accomplish the throne of England for their own ends, and in the end the Spanish let her be incriminated just to use that as a reason to declare Holy War on England.

I don't think either of them was beautiful or youthful by the time Mary was executed! Age and menopause comes to all us ladies in the end LOL Mary's last few years were closely confined and inactive - it's highly likely that by the time she was executed well into her 40s, she'd put on weight, gone grey, and lost much of that famous sex appeal.

To me he's a reality check, after 400 years we're under the illusion of living in a modern evolved world when in fact there are more loose radical nutts now than back then. Catholics, christians, born again christians, jehova witnesses, muslims, jews, protestants, lutherans, ortodoxes and who knows what else is in the oven right now. What's the point of walking forward in science and technology if as an overall society we're going backwards.
