VitalStim at THERAPY 2000 — Christian's story

Christian is an 11-year-old boy who had a normal birth history. At three weeks old,however, he acquired meningoencephalitis and developed a high fever. He suffered a seizure the second week of his hospital stay, which caused cerebral palsy. Christian was in and out of the hospital for the first six months of his life. He is fed through a gastric tube and receives breathing treatments.

VitalStim goals for Christian include tolerating electrical stimulation for 30 minutes and swallowing 20 times per session for improved secretion management within three months. Another goal is to have him not show any signs of aspiration following flavor trials for improved safety of the swallow within cert period.
