It was only by accident that Steve and I ran into members of the Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) while snowshoeing up St Mary's Glacier (60 kilometres west of Denver). There were two separate CMC groups there that day; one was Denver's Wilderness Trekking School while the other was Boulder's avalanche awareness course.
The CMC conducts a lot of excellent training at little or no cost to students - courses like the above, along with basic mountaineering, first aid, and other offerings are essential for anyone serious about Colorado's mountains or mountaineering in general!
In this video, according to my GPS, the elevation was almost 11,000 feet (3,353 metres) but I don't know for sure as the cloud cover was so thick (and the canyon walls so narrow) it was hard to get a good satellite fix.
Later in the afternoon we stopped by the Clear Creek Ranger District (near Idaho Springs) and they said the wind had been gusting up to 55 mph (88 km/h).

My friends and I were planning a trip up there over the summer, but weren't able to make it. What time of year was this that you went up?

That video on St. Mary's was recorded on December 12th, 2009 - two years ago from now and the weather we're currently having is just as bad!

This does not look fun. It reminded my painful trip to Mount Mummy in RMNP. The wind was 50-60 MPH. It was painful and don't want do that again. :-D

You're right - that kind of wind and cold can be painful!
