This is a voyage I made from Jacksonville, Florida to Cuba in 2001. We sailed aboard Candide, a 38' Hans Christian Traditional, which has been my home since 1998 (I'm a liveaboard). Please check out my web site at www.sleepingwithoars.com

I've shown the video to a few friends now, and it's become clear that I need to explain a few things. This video shows an entire VOYAGE, starting in Jacksonville, Florida (far, far north-east Florida). Cuba, by sail, is over 700 nautical miles from where we began the journey. Just getting to Cuba is an adventure in itself; the first 1/2 of this 30-minute video records the voyage from Jacksonville south to Cocoa Beach to Ft. Lauderdale to Key West. This part of the trip took about 10 days.

Key West was our "jumping off point" to Cuba, but this is a sail boat! It's not wise to simply sail south from Key West directly to Cuba because the Gulf Stream would push the boat too far East. So, we left Key West heading Northwest and then started heading south past the Dry Tortugas (about 70 miles West of Key West). So, we were quite far west of Havana when we left U.S. waters. This was to counter-act the eastern flow of the Gulf Stream.

Sorry for all the sailing techno-babble, but this is the way it's done. Sailing is not like driving a car on the ocean. One has to account for wind and current to sail to a destination. If you want more information, send me an e-mail. (less)

  • YouTube removed it because I allegedly used a copyrighted song.

  • who sings that "over the Rainbow Version"?

  • He was a Hawaii native named Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. It's from the album "Alone in IZ World."

  • American's want to travel anytime to Cuba --they should be be able to President Obama --

  • Trip looks awesome. I'm less than a year from transferring my life to a live aboard and I plane to spend quite a bit of time in the caribbean.

Did you have any issues with the OFAC or customs on the way back to the US?

That version of over the rainbow is what caused me to learn ukulele.

    Happy Sailing!

  • I've been to Cuba. When you go to Havana did you see that famous hotel with the turtles. My hotel was in Varedaro. The people there are so much nicer than New yorkers. Not saying there bad but nicer! LOVE CUBA ! ! !
