From the "Alien/Aliens Triple Pack" released on VHS to coincide with the theatrical release of Alien3. This programme was not included in the "Alien Quadrilogy" DVD set. I took down Part 1 of this after Fox made a copyright claim. You can find it elsewhere on Youtube, re-posted by others.

  • If Fincher had been able to make the movie that HE wanted to make, it would have been up there with camerons.

  • @AlexFruen Maybe. Cameron's movie is a romp that swings brilliantly between action and character moments. Alien3 is dark and depressing with short bursts of action. I found it difficult to draw from the Quadrilogy docs what it was that Fincher wanted to have in the movie that wasn't already there. One of the few hints is more gore. Newt's autopsy would be longer, an idea I find repellant. An early cut drove people out of the room in revulsion. The Se7en of the series? I'd rather not.

  • @AmurG2 Of course, subtlety is far more effective... but wasn't the original idea to have an enormous wooden planet with the surviving characters from the last film?

  • @AlexFruen The wooden planet idea was Vincent Ward's baby. He was the first one chosen to direct, and the first one to leave. He somehow still got Story credit. Fincher came in much later. I just did a quick Google search for 'alien3 fincher interview' and one hit is a surprisingly blunt article from 1991. Fincher briefly mentions disagreements over the script, but mostly it's anger over trying to get perfect shots. I suspect his 'true' Alien3 wouldn't be much different from what we got.

  • These 'making of' "documentaries" are funny to watch now especially since the crew talked so candidly on the DVD special edition about how fucked up the production of alien3 actually was.

    Studio propaganda

  • @mrchoochoohead Alien3 was still in theatres when this was released. It, like almost all Making Ofs, is an advertisement for that film. When was the last time you saw an advertisement (other than cigarettes) that listed a product's deficiencies and compromises?

  • Alien 3 was great. Yah maybe it wasn't quite as epic as Alien and Aliens but that doesn't make it a bad film ...

  • This movie has the most emotional content of the whole series, hands down. Its, in Bishop's words, "very human."

  • I love the music.

    :*(

  • It was sad that Ripley died at the end of Alien 3.

  • Alien 3 had a nice overall feeling.. the Dog alien or Runner was so brutal and gory, it was ok but most people expected something else I guess
