Takahashi Chikuzan, Tsugaru-jamisen master, playing the shakuhachi in this 1974 solo recording of "Take" (Bamboo). Chikuzan performed mostly on shamisen, particularily after his mentor, Narita Unchiku ("the father of Tsugaru folk song," pictured in the video) died. Chikuzan accompanied Narita on shakuhachi on such Tsugaru staples as "hohai bushi" and "Tsugaru Yamauta".

Thank you _very_ much for posting this and providing the links on the Shakuhachi Forum page. I only read your post tonight (May 15 2009) !!! Not being a teacher, or much of a student for that matter, Chikuzan sounds like a good min'yo player. Shakuhachi are tuned on the Yo scale (yosempo) with the tonic Ro. It's too late for me to noodle around tonight with Tsugaru Yamauta or Take, but my guess is that he's sticking pretty much to that basic scale and variants on "Esashi Oiwake" figures.
