  • Worst ever maritime disaster? What about the titanic?

  • The Lancastria disaster claimed at least 4000 lives, more than the combined losses in the Titanic and Lusitania disasters. The difference is that the British government covered up the disaster using official censorship

  • The Titanic was much more famous for several reasons but from what I understand this tragedy had more fatalities (est 4000, the Titanic had about 1520) The Titanic was a peace time disaster and this was a war time disaster, there are usually more fatalities in the later. The Lancastria deserves to be remembered.

  • The Germans are a Evil, Evil Race of people.......

  • Sometimes they erased or added a funnel to deceive the adversary. It is very strange for me that the L was used as a troop ship, I guess she made not more than 15 knots, probably 12. The height of the funnel makes me think she had a steam engine, was she refitted for diesel?

  • I'm doing my own research into the Lancastria and her sinking and in the photos I've seen, she has one funnel. I've seen one or two of her with two funnels but there are even some photos of her sinking with the bow just under the waterline and she only has one in those photos. Her original plans show one funnel but I can't find any plans for the refits she was reported to have had.

    Can anyone explain this?

  • And actually in world terms, we are only referring to British maritime tragedies. In recent years, there have been some very serious disasters;

    the MV Joola which sank off Senegal in 2002; 2000 deaths est,

    the al-Salam Bocaccio 98 which sank in the Red Sea in 2006- 900 killed

    and only last month, over 700 died in the Princess of the Stars disaster in the Phillepines.

    The worst maritime disaster anywhere I believe was the Wilhelm Gustloff disaster in 1945- 9400 killed. All tragedies.

  • There have been several reasons as to why the Titanic is the best remembered. One, her story is the most dramatic out of all the ships that were lost. After all, she was 'unsinkable', it was her maiden voyage, she was the largest ship in the world and she was carrying some of the wealthiest people in the world. The Lancastria wasn't the biggest or the grandest ship out there and her sinking so even if the sinking wasn't covered up, I doubt she'd be remembered very much but I sure think she does!
