SYNOPSIS:

Gopinath was the zemindar of the village. He was rich and mighty. He was the patron of the village Brahmins who considered him to be their champion of religion and justice. But there was a mischievous 'but'- underneath his high-polished manners and religious -- mindedness, the zeminder was a debauch of the lowest type and a tyrant of the highest order! He was a devil incarnate. With the Help of Sarju, his able and cunning lieutenant, the zeminder could perpetrate the blackest crime with impunity and then smile by complacently! Baiju, the washer-man of the village lived happily with his simple wife Kusum and his sister Rami, Rami was young and beautiful and her charms were irresistible. There was the Temple of Basuli in the village. Chandidas, the disciple of Achariya, was the priest of the temple. Chandidas was imaginative a lover of humanity. And above all he was a lover of truth. Day after day, in the compound of the temple, Rami was to be seen sweeping the temple, Rami was to be seen sweeping the temple-yard and day after day, within the temple. Chandidas was found to be going on with his priestly duties. Between Rami and Chandidas there were the hard stone steps of the temple. Between them there were also the barriers of caste and society, which were harder to climb then the stone-steps of the temple. As is usual, Rami's irresistible charms cast a spell on the lustful eyes of Gopinath, with the help of his right hand man in all his nefarious activities Sarju, was determined to get Rami were in vani. Gopinath had to take recourse to force, and kidnapped Rami to his palace. While he was about to outrage Rami in a private room-Kalyani, the zeminder's wife and living ideal of Hindu womanhood, stepped in and rescued Rami from Gopinath's clutches.
The zaminder baffled and infuriated-started a series of persecutions on Rami and her brother's family, which climaxed in the burning of poor Baiju's hut. When the hut was burning Chandidas whose ardent love for Rami compelled him to throw off all barriers of caste and creed, saved Rami, He even risked his life for his great love. Gopinath was not idle and through his anipulations chandidas was considered to be impure and fallen from the path of religion and society.Ultimately he was forced to concede to the proposals of a penace 'Prayaschitya', for... For what else than his connection with the washer woman? Rami heard of Chandidas on the point of doing the enance-but she could not believe it-it was impossible for her to do it! Anyway, she wanted to get the truth direct from Chandidas. She ran to the scene of Penance and reached the scene after suffering many a physical tortures in her way -- Gopinath took all possible care to preventing Rami to see Chandidas before the penance was done and posted men at every corner. But love is all powerful -- and Rami stood face to face with Chandidas. The Brahmins shuddered, Gopinath stood baffled and roared within himself and Chandidas stood up, leaving the penance unfinished, took Rami in his embrace and then went out of the temple, out of the village -- out of the rigid and unkind conventions of the Society.Everything -- society, caste and convention lay behind. The two moved out to the realm of love. Caste and convention frowned -- but truth -- who will say if it frowned or smiled?
