NYC Thunderstorms & Amazing Shelf Cloud Over RFK Bridge 7.26.12

*Not for network broadcast but feel free to share and embed*- Severe storms erupted early in the afternoon in western PA/NY and quickly made their way east towards the NYC Metro. Wind damage reports were common in upstate NY and in Pennsylvania but the storms weakened a bit by the time they got to me here in the city. Still though, it's not everyday that we are treated to a nice turbulent shelf cloud but that's exactly what we got!

I drove up to Astoria Park in northern Queens to document the storms as they approached. Astoria Park borders the East River and offers up great views of both the RFK/Triboro Bridge and Hells Gate Bridge. The shelf cloud moving towards me with the bridge and manhattan skyline in the background was pretty sweet! All in all these storms weren't insane by any means, but a nice treat regardless! No shelf cloud , this is a gustfront

A gust front (also known as an outflow boundary) is essentially a mini cold front, the passage of one is associated with a wind shift. Yes, a gust front did come through with this line of storms, but a gust front is not a cloud type. Shelf cloud/Arcus clouds are many times associated with a thunderstorms gust front. That's what this is.
