The historic floods apparently knocked out the water treatment plant in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. And now 25-million gallons of raw sewage are being dumped into the Cedar River each day. Crews are trying to repair the damaged sewer lines but it could be months before the plant is operational. SOT: "It's going to take a few months, probably six months, maybe longer than that for them to get up and running to full capacity where they have primary treatment, secondary treatment, their incinerator going." Tanya Nix Environmental Protection Agency The floodwaters finally dropped enough that officials let hundreds of people return to their homes and businesses to check out the damage. But its estimated half of the 4-thousand flood-damaged homes will have to be demolished because they'd be difficult to rebuild. Floodwaters this month are being blamed for more than 20 deaths in the Midwest.
