When I played this back, I went Yikes! this is meandering. This is more of a spontaneous run through talking about whatever comes to mind. I could have been more succinct, but the basic ideas are there. I borrow heavily from Ellis Marsalis's version of Sophisticated Lady, which is my favorite.

The digital keys are from www.midikeyz.com It's a program well worth getting.

I have some materials up on my website -- the lead sheet and the midi file.
Thanks for watching.

  • Excellent video! ... What's the name of the software that's displaying the notes on the top of the screen? ... It 'interprets' the note values just perfectly...

  • Great tutorial. Thanks a million for posting these. I enjoy this "spontaneous runthrough style"! I fell like it might give you the opportunity to mention something in your video you might not have mentioned otherwise. I just discovered your videos thanks to a shoutout from Lot2Learn. Cool seeing you two jam together!

  • @FredKpiano Tritone of A flat is D natural or Mibb.

    Greetings.

  • Tritone of A flat is E natural ?

    Enjoying your videos though !

  • nice tutorial thank you!

  • very nice. I believe the chord at 1:20 was a D add flat 9 (D F# A E flat)

  • Thanks nukepcr. Sometimes I prefer to leave out the root to imply the chord instead of stating it. It's just a different sound color.

  • Hehe I was thinking about the 5+ too when I said tritone. Also at 1:34 when you say the second and the third I think you meant the third and the seventh (of the F7 chord) or maybe you were talking about fingers. :)) Why are there so many numbers involved when talking about music? It's VERY confusing. You not playing the roots most of the time is also confusing. I guess it sounds better? And is it a must if you have a bass player?

    Those are some sick chords!
