In a world where despots cling to power by any means, Bhutan's much loved King is voluntarily relinquishing control. It's part of a plan to engage with the wider world.

This tiny mountain kingdom is one of the least undisturbed places on earth. Here, emphasis is placed on 'Gross National Happiness', and schools teach children to live in harmony. "We are an independent kingdom with a very strong policy that preserves our environment," explains author Tshewang Dhendup. The king is widely revered across the country. "He's a very humble man," explains one friend. "No Swiss bank accounts, no Lear jets. Lives in a log cabin." His subjects are still coming to terms with his decision to share power. In recent years, Bhutan has started reaching beyond the mountains. But nothing is allowed to endanger its unique culture

  • King and Queen of Bhutan are visiting Japan now. I am impressed by the King's speech made in the Diet. I am so moved by his speech and I cannot stop crying since I watched it this morning. I feel strong gratitude toward the King and Queen for having come to Japan. Sorry for my poor English.

  • King of Bhutan is superb, even though his country has been invaded by Chinese over 20% of land, he never mentioned about it while visiting Japan, but made a great speech regarding friendship between Bhutan and Japan. Such attitude deeply impressed Japanese. In addition, King has special kind of air which no one but few saints have. He is a true King.

i agree...though i am a born muslim..but people have destroyed the monotheistic religions by their stubborn dogmas...i just hope india stop manipulating bhutan...e.g bhutan cant enjoy full bilateral relations with pakistan cuz india 'doesnt like it'...i mean WTF!!!!!!!!!!

  • while no country or people are perfect, bhutan and the bhutanese people comes closest to perfection.

i sincerely hope that they get involved with the perfidious chinese regime, which will destroy these wonderful people.

my best to the bhutanese people.

p.s. even though i was born a muslim, i urge you people to stay away from monotheistic faiths, particularly islam.

  • @HanDynasty26349 that is so true...

  • @scorpioninpink I agree they destroy so much cultures and then they try to adapt stuff and then claim that its part of their religion after they completely destroyed a religion like some pagan religions the christians adapted some of their holidays and then renamed it to conceal the evidence

  • @HanDynasty26349 i hope so... they just destroy cultures... look at japan... no christian, no muslim...
