My celica has recently started making this chattering noise at 3000rpm and partial throttle. The sound doesn't occur at idle or full throttle. Does anyone know what it might be?

  • I pulled the oil pan and found that 6 out of 8 rod bearings had spun. By the way, it is a 2000...I can give you the VIN if you care to doubt me.

  • @rustangcobra : Hey I have 2002 Toyota celica and it has the same noise like your car did. Did replacing rod bearing helped at all and what else did you do to fix it. Thank you.

  • @datka1980 ; After I changed the rod bearings, the crank would not turn over by hand or with the starter motor. Basically the rod bearings were oval shaped instead of round. I sold the car for $2k in non running condition even though it was worth $4-5k in running condition. I now have a BMW 335i convertible and no longer have to worry about it. Used celica motors were around $2k so it just wasn't worth it to me.

  • my car did the same thing u have to have the crank turned by a machine shop wen u replace the bearings or buy a new crank with the bearings included

  • @bminsein if you have yet to dig around and find out what the difference is

the 1zz motor is the fuel economy edition just a basic standard compression motor

the 2zz motor is toyota's performance edition it has a higher compression ratio and there are a few other differences between them i can't remember all of them
