Contrabass saxes are proper saxophones, Tubaxes are pseudo-saxes.
-
There were only two subcontrabass saxophones built and neither played. They were both for show. Someone did however build an extremely large saxophone-like instrument that could not play a full scale and did need more than one person to blow into it.
-
Could somebody please play 'American Patrol' by Glenn Miller on a contrabass saxophone. I think it would sound good. Better??
-
wouldn't any saxophone lower than a bass sax be a contrabass? This looks like the eppelsheim contra - which has the proper bore size to be a true contrabass saxophone, unlike the tubax which can be argued is a type of single reed sarrusophone.
-
The bore size ratio is different, so in that sense it isn't a sax.. but everything else is.
It is a sudo-sax IMO :)

If you want some real contrabass solos listen to "Canal Street Blues" ~ Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band on youtube. You'll find the solos at about 3:40
