PRESS RELEASE
The popularity of erotic art continues to grow as perveyors of the form introduce audiences to the various genres that span time, place and culture. Sin City Gallery, a new venue that opened its Las Vegas doors earlier this year, presents a new exhibition devoted to one of the oldest forms of sexy art: Japanese Shunga. Called AMERICAN SHUNGA, the show will feature artists Nick San Pedro and Geonni Banner, and will run March 31 through April 24, 2011. The brainchild behind this exhibit is gallery owner, Dr. Laura Henkel, a sexologist and art consultant who specializes in erotic art acquisitions and appraisals. Proceeds from the sale of a portion of the exhibit will be donated to the American Red Cross to aid victims of the Japanese Quake and Tsunami.
The exhibit, AMERICAN SHUNGA, embraces Japanese traditional eroticism with a deep dreamlike quality that is delicately veiled by the aesthetics of modern construction. The Japanese translation for shunga means "pictures of spring." '"Spring" is used as common euphemism for sex. During the 16th and 19 centuries, artwork openly featured heterosexual and homosexual sex acts without any social stigma. Gallery owner, Dr. Laura Henkel, states, "Both Nick San Pedro and Geonni Banner create an exciting interpretation that is sure to entice patrons to appreciate this particular genre of erotic art."
Nick San Pedro is known for his commissioned portraits of iconic celebrities by such organizations as the 45thAnnual Grammy Awards. San Pedro's shunga-inspired artwork mixes erotic symbolism to create exotic fantasies of America's most desirable pop culture personalities. San Pedro's works feature such personalities as Madonna, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears in Asian inspired themes.
