This is a live, slow & sweet, version of the Mercy Seat with Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. It's by far my favourite version and I don't know which gig it's from. If anyone knows, please comment. I know the slide show is not the best, but it's my first (and it's the sound that's important here)!

  • @marciniko Sorry, but Nick cave wrote this in 1988. Johnny Cash covered it in 2000. Have a look at the Wiki entry for "The Mercy Seat (Song)".

The Charles Bukowski reference is because someone did a Bukowski slideshow and used Cash's version of the song as background and posted it on Youtube. Title "Charles Bukowski - Music by Johnny Cash (Mercy Seat)".

This is misleading, but, you are right, he is an excellent writer - he just didn't write this.

Also, I like the Cash version of the song.

  • Um mich ausdrücken zu können schreibe ich es auf deutsch... Nick Cave hat mein Herz erobert und dieses Lied ist ein Beweis dafür.

  • I was curious so I did a translation: -

In order to be able to express myself I write it in German ... Nick Cave has captured my heart and this song is proof.

    schöne Gefühle

  • Nick Cave is, maybe along with johnny cash, Bob Dylan and Jeff Buckley, the best songwriter that has set foot on the Earth

  • I love this song so much...

  • @Fabian3r1ksson Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits...

  • Chilling and somber. Definitely the best songwriter of my generation. Sadly when I say Nick Cave ...they usually say Nick WHO ???

  • I think this version just knocked the B-Sides and Rarities version from the number 1 spot on my favourites list.

  • There's something really primal about Nick Cave , especially live... I remember seeing him in Sydney, he played the original version of Mercy Seat & when he leant over the crowd & sang, they began to move backwards.. It is the only show I have ever been to where a crowd surge was actually moving away from the band..

  • amazing. thanks for uploading!

  • The last few moments of this one are much definitive of Cave's power.

  • @Fabian3r1ksson

    what about Cohen ;-)
