In 1995, the Community ESL Project was created as a result of a partnership between the
Leaders Roundtable and Portland State Universitys Department of Applied Linguistics.
This project provides classes taught by PSU students to adults learning to speak English at a
variety of locations in Multnomah County. In these free (or low cost) multilevel classes,
those whose involvement may have previously been limited gain the skills needed to become
more involved in their communities.
