Finnishing School continues with a trip up country. It's unavoidably dark on the journey as Finland doesn't get many hours of daylight in the winter, but bear with me - it lightens up in the second half, and I recreate the effect of Sibelius Finlandia being played over speakers in Imatra when they let the waters come crashing over the dam. Unfortunately that only happens at Christmas and in the summer season, so I didn't get to see one of Finland's most vaunted spectacles, but in winter the site of it also has something to offer, as you will see the icicle formations hanging off the rocks, and the famous Valtionshotelli of Imatra set off in the snow.

  • This was told to me by a Finn from Joensuu over 10 years ago. The 2nd word is spelt 'phonetically'by a non-Finn so apologies. Maybe she was using a local dialect ? Do you deny that such an expression exists ?

  • What on earth are you talking about? :DD

I'm a Finn and never heard of such thing..."viirkoen"? (That is not a word I'm afraid.)

  • Wow! I have been to Finland twice - even if it was only a day trip to see Santa! It was usually pitch black by 12.30 / 1pm

  • Finland is fiercely proud of its independence. Thus the ultimate insult in these parts is to say 'Venaja viirkoen' which roughly translates as "May the Russians get you !", alluding to the days of General Mannerheim and the winter war etc

  • maybe i will if i buy a video camera i might do it as one of the last videos of i do of home before i come to poland! ;p

  • Very interesting and instructional for those of us who have never visited Finland. I admire your determination to keep filming. Best wishes.
