The (sadly) late and great Sam Mitchell with his rough blues bottleneck style. Known also for his group the Sandmen, Sam was a great solo guitarist too. It was impossible to only pick one from his album so I will post another shortly. Enjoy this gem.

  • and we had a great time. I think it was for the (British) Byrds. Later heard he was with Baldry's band in Iceland???

Wish I'd kept in touch, he was a one-off and a great guy.

  • @chris64walter He was one heck of a talent. You were quite fortunate to have known him and if you still have the recordings then you have a treasure. Let me know if you ever post them.

  • Sammy...True genius!! Lee Mitchell...x (:-)

  • I remember him well – sweet man, lovely playing! Alisha

  • Fantastic slidin'!

  • Great to hear this. I knew Sam well-used to drink in the same pub in London during the 70s and 80s (Bricklayer's Arms in Putney). Many an evening was spent with him playing pinball for the highest score of the week (first prize a bottle of spirits of your choice!)

Sam was indeed an enormously talented guy; it's so sad that his demons took him at so young an age. The last time we spoke was at the Bishopstock Blues Festival here in Exeter, where he was demonstrating National resonators.

  • Thank you so much for sharing.

I had the great privilege to know Sam the last few years of his life. He played every monday night in a small place called "Rådhuskroen" in Copenhagen. My best friend and I used to be there and even though it was EVERY monday night and he often played alone, the place was packed and you were guarantied a good night and great music..... it is so hard to find anywhere else in this country and I still miss him at that kind of music and entertainment he represented.

  • Thank for this he was my big bro although I only met him a few times he was a lot older than me, love to hear him play and can share so my kids can hear what good music sounds like thank again.

  • I first met Sam busking outside the British Film Theatre in Brighton and immediately recognised his talent. He was sleeping rough at the time so got him back to our student flat where he played us some amazing guitar. I recorded him on a Grundig TK20 tape machine and Chris Thomas and I listened on the Air Studio sound system and could hear not only his skills but the clock chiming on the mantelpiece!! Met him for a recording session, with accordion and steel guitar,
