@bocobob I think at the time critics weren't "allowed" to like a seriously gory horror movie. Like a guy on the AV Club said, all the negative reviews can be summed up in two words; Ew, gross! Alien also got pretty bad reviews.

@snake2006 Yup! But I ignored all of that because I cant expect anyone to match Carpenter's movie. The same thing could have been said of the new version of the 1983 V television show which was ruined as a remake in 2010. This new generation is hellbent on remaking everything from movies to music. I call it lazyness! Maybe they will remaked E.T. next?

ET was released 2 weeks earlier than The Thing. Universal was promoting both movies at the same time, which was stupid of them.

Oh you mean how it does a poor job at setting up Carpenter's movie.
Notice how the 2 Norwegians are now messed up, since Lars blows up and the pilot is shot. But the pilot never experienced the thing, so why would he try to kill the dog, makes no sense.
Also, Lars isn't wearing the right Jacket. In the 82 film, the shooter is wearing a ripped parka, and yet in the end of this movie, neither guy has a ripped fur hooded parka.
2011 prequel sucks.

This movei remains the quintessential faithful adaptation of the story which the 1951 version was a poor adaptation of the story due to the limited technology in special effects in the 50's and was cold war propaganda

hmmm, havent seen either the new or original version, but this one looks better,.

Oh shit oh shit oh shit, we lost contact with scientists drilling at Lake Vostok, one of Earth's largest underground and subglacier lakes, they haven't been heard of in 5 days, lets hope they didn't get killed by the Thing.

Just finished watching the 2011 version and its set up as the beginning of John Carpenter's version. The very beginning of Carpenter's is the ending of the 2011...very interesting

This is a great film. The special effects were terrific for 1982 and I think they are better than the computer generated graphics of the modern age. The whole feel of the film is great. The unknown, isolation, fear, terror, just a classic horror movie .I was very impressed by Curt Russel's acting in this movie. I don't understand critics, most of them disliked this movie. This is one of my favorites science fictions of all time.
