Calvin Sieb • a great life

Calvin Sieb, violinist, died this past Monday in Quebec City, just a week before his 82nd birthday.

Full of life and energy until the end of his days, Calvin was concertmaster for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra 1959-1979. The next 10 years, he was concertmaster for the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, France. He was Professor of Violin, Viola, Chamber Music and Orchestra Coaching at the University of Ottawa 1989-2001 and taught at the Conservatoire de Music de Gatineau, Quebec.

As a soloist, Calvin Sieb performed with many eminent conductors, including Charles Dutoit, Franz-Paul Decker, Kyril Kondrashin, Zubin Mehta, Walter Susskind, Charles Munch, Wilfrid Pelletier, and Pinchas Zuckerman.

He attended the Meadowmount School of Music and the Juilliard Graduate School of Music. His teachers included Jacques Thibaud, Ivan Galamian, Joseph Gingold and Nadya Boulanger.

A dedicated teacher, Calvin was always willing to help any violinist at any level.

J'ai eu la chance de travailler avec Calvin de 1987 à 1991 à l'Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse. C'etait un grand collegue, une grande personne et un grand musicien. Merci pour tes conseils, ta grande classe et ta personalité. On ne t'oublera pas.
