"What are these,
So wither'd and so wild in their attire,
That look not like th' inhabitants o' th' earth,
And yet are on't? Live you? or are you aught
That man may question? . . ."
Macbeth: Act 1, Scene 3
The Discoverie of Witchcraft was written by Reginald Scot in 1584, intended as a logical argument disputing the existence of witches. It is a meticulously well researched study of witchcraft, also touching on astrology, alchemy, divination, and more. The text presents logical proof of the witches' self-delusions or elucidates deliberate fraud on the part of the so-called witches. Nevertheless, Shakespeare's first plays came out 6 years after the publishing of this text, and one can definitely see Scot's influence on Shakespeare in the shaping of the weird sisters, or witches, in Macbeth. Scot describes witches as "women which be commonly old, lame . . . poor, sullen, superstitious . . . They are leane and deformed, shewing melancholie in their faces, to the horror of all that see them." (Discoverie, Chapter 3)
Well, the immortality or perpetual crone-like longevity of a supernatural being such as a witch (or a Wiitch, note the pun on the double "i" spelling) comes at a cost, and some body parts, especially the tender tissue that makes up the eyes, wear out and must be replaced...
Are they actually blindfolded or is it just makeup? I love how they tell the wiitches' story throughout their moves!
