I used to work on the ferret project in Aubrey Valley, Arizona. (yes these are the native and endangered ones not the ones in the pet store) This is in one of the preconditioning pens. Many ferrets will do this strange slinky-like dance.
I swear it looked as if he was just rolling and flopping around because it was warm sunny and he was in a good mood. Makes me proud that I contributed to this. (Military has something called CFC were we can pick an orginization or charity to donate to. Last time, I picked the Black footed ferret project.)
Not only vets can scan for chips also rescues such as the Humane Society and animal control. i think it is pretty standard that stray animals are checked for a chip. It is very important to keep your information related to the chip up to date. The chip is only good if the information is current. Many people forget to update the chip online when they move. When this happens the finder can still not find the owner and that is just such a shame.
that means they are playing. my three do this all the time. it's nicknamed the weasel war dance.
