The American Lung Association (ALA) of Hawaii is the oldest voluntary health
organization in Hawaii. As we celebrate our 80th year, we ask you to join us for our
second annual signature event, The Breathe Concert: Clean Air for Everyone.
Just in time for an entertaining holiday gift, tickets are now available for our annual
major fundraiser, The Breathe Concert. A lineup of Hawaiis top entertainers will
perform on January 31st at the Hawaii Theatre. Please join us in celebrating the ALA of
Hawaiis 80th anniversary and honor those still fighting lung disease and those lost to it.
Scheduled to perform are: Amy Hanaiali`i; George Kuo, Martin Pahinui
and Aaron Mahi with hula dancer Kanoe Miller; Sonya Mendez; Sean
Na`auao; Roy Sakuma and the students of the Roy Sakuma Studio; Jake
Shimabukuro; Mihana Souza; Leon Williams; and Lea Woods Friedman.
ALA of Hawaii Board member and Event Chairperson, Cathy Foy-Mahi,
will co-emcee the concert with entertainer and former smoker Al
Waterson.
Other entertainers may be added and the lineup may change. The Breathe Concert
anthem, Breathe, by composer Johnson Enos, will also be performed.
Tickets to the 7:30 p.m. concert may be purchased at the Hawaii Theatre Center box
office at 1130 Bethel Street, by phone at 528-0506, or online at
www.hawaiitheatre.com/boxoffice.com (note: the Hawaii Theatre adds a "convenience
fee" to the cost of each ticket purchased online).
Ticket prices are $135, $55, and $35 ... but not for you! For a limited time, when you
call or go to the theatre, mention that you are a supporter of the American Lung
Association of Hawaii for a $5 discount on each ticket purchased. You will be asked for
the password its CLEAR. The same password will work online. Please enter the
password when prompted and it will save you $5 per ticket. Those who purchase the
$135 tickets will be invited to attend the after-concert party with entertainers in the
theatres Weyand Room.

Breathing less is not an option.

More Reasons to Support The Breathe Concert:
During a year in which vog and sulfur dioxide have affected many throughout Hawaii,
we continue to face the issue of clear air for the future of our keiki, our residents, and
our visitors. With over 154,000 people in Hawaii with some form of lung disease, clean
air is more than an environmental issue - its an everyday matter of life and breath.
Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer of both women and men in Hawaii.
Hawaii is ranked #2 in the nation for youth asthma and the number of asthmatic children
is growing. Hawaii is also #2 nationally in the incidence of tuberculosis and over the
course of less than a year we have seen three cases of TB show up in our schools.
Over 140,000 Hawaii residents, 40,000 of whom are children, continue to be exposed to
secondhand smoke and according to the most recent Surgeon Generals report, there
is no risk-free level of exposure. Our tobacco prevention, cessation, secondhand
smoke, and asthma control programs and activities are directly supported by local
fundraising.
About The American Lung Association of Hawaii:
ALA of Hawaii had its beginnings on the island of Kauai in 1929 and serves a statewide
community. As the ALA of Hawaiis programs and services are usually not funded by
county or federal sources, the ALA of Hawaii relies on grants plus individual and
corporate donations. By partnering with businesses, agencies, and grassroots
initiatives, the ALA of Hawaii pools resources and develops programs and services that
strive to meet the needs of the families, children, and adults we serve. We are
committed to our purpose because when you cant breathe, nothing else matters.
Our messages:
1. No search for a cure should go unfunded.
2. No child or adult should die from asthma.
3. No child or adult should be exposed or addicted to tobacco products.
4. No community should be exposed to unhealthy air.
