You wanted to know which final fantasy game started the story, and the answer is that all of them have their own unique story. None of the games are related, except the sequels to games such as FFX-2, they just all have the name final fantasy.

What? How is this FF? It's not turn based. Yes, you should play 2d ones. I like the style and the story in these. 7 is amazing :)

The 2d ones are the best.

Play Final Fantasy 7,8,9,10 fer sure
Then worry about the others. They are turn based rpgs
Although Final Fantasy 12 is a whole new yet similar game style that I really appreciated.
Crystal Chronicals is like a completely different game, just with Final Fantasy stapled to the beginning to make sales. Hope that helps.
BTW, FF7 is the "best Final Fantasy ever" (not my oppinions, but pretty much everyone elses)

Square-Enix should stop using the name Final Fantasy for this games. This game is good, but it doesn't represent any of the FF traditional games. They just use the name too much, for sales purpose, and it confuses new gamers, who buy this game hoping to be something it's not. Anyway, great game!
