This is my submission for the Folk Uke Extravaganza Contest. This was my first time trying to work with Garage Band on my Mac to get some backing vocals and a bit of percussion. I wanted to to do the kazoo solo live with the uke but I don't have one of those kazoo holder thingies. Did I overdo it a bit? Perhaps, but what the heck? I was having too much fun!

I found Bill Morgan And His Gal on a CD I got from the library called If You Ain't Got The Do-Re-Mi, Songs Of Rags And Riches. The tune was done by The New Lost City Ramblers. I couldn't find who wrote the song but it dates back to 1906 when it was first published as "William Morgan" and recorded as "My Name Is Morgan, but It Ain't J.P." by Bob Roberts. Apparently it has also been recorded by Buster Carter and Preston Young.

This contest, put on by doogey9, AKA Todd Baio, was a great excuse to dig into some wonderful old music. I really did my research to find a song I wanted to do. I got Cds from the library, listened to samples on Itunes, created a folk station on Pandora and scoured Youtube to find just the right song. Unfortunately the contest came at a time when I'm moving and have little time to indulge myself. However, I must thank Todd for having this contest which has generated in me an excitement for music which I haven't felt in years.

I have to give a special thanks to Lew Dite (http://www.youtube.com/user/lewdite) for being kind enough to provide me with the chords to the song which I then transposed.

  • Yeah I love it. I knew I stumbled on the right song for the uke contest when after I first played it my three year old wanted to hear it over and over again!

  • Nice strummng. I like the song. Assistance from Corona?

  • @ukedaman - Ha ha ha! I probably should have had a few before I did this! No, since my kids were both napping at the time I had to shoot this video in our solarium where we're storing all our packed up boxes for a move at the end of the month. A little unintended free advertising for Corona!
