The Oregonian
A homeless man who sneaked into a Beaverton hot tub then called 9-1-1 to ask for towels, hot chocolate and a hug will spend more than three weeks behind bars.
Mark Eskelsen had been soaking in a private tub in the 15000 block of Southwest Village Lane for several hours Sunday morning when he called emergency dispatchers and asked for help.
First identifying himself as "the sheriff of Washington County," Eskelsen complained to the dispatcher that he had been sitting in the tub for about 10 hours, his towels were wet, his voice was hoarse from yelling and his fingers looked like prunes.
"I just need a hug and a warm cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows in it," Eskelsen later said.
Neighbors had already called 9-1-1, concerned about the man bellowing from the fenced pool.
"Well, I've been yelling for about an hour and a half," Eskelsen told the dispatcher at one point.
Beaverton police arrived and arrested the naked Eskelsen.
He pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree criminal trespass and improper use of the 9-1-1 system. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail but could be out by Sept. 23.

BEAVERTON, Ore. -- A Beaverton man called 911 to tell police he needed a towel and a hug Saturday morning, but instead he found himself arrested on criminal trespassing charges.
Police officers said they found Mark Eskelsen in a private hot tub at the Four Seasons Rec Center at about 7 a.m. Neighbors had complained about noise in the area, but police said Eskelsen called emergency dispatchers himself and claimed to be the Washington County sheriff.
"Believe it or not, I am the sheriff of Washington County and I've been in this hot tub here, I don't know, at least 10 hours," Eskelsen said in the 911 call.
Eskelsen said he was cold from being in the pool. He asked police to bring him a towel, a hot chocolate and also said he needed a hug.
Prior to making his emergency call, Eskelsen climbed the locked fence to get into the pool area, police said.
When a dispatcher asked if he was experiencing a medical emergency, he mentioned he suffered from a medical condition and shouldn't be yelling.
Caller: I finally got sick of it and decided to get smart and pick up the telephone. No, I don't want to call emergency because I don't know what else to do.
During the nine-minute emergency call, Eskelsen later admitted that he was not the sheriff of Washington County. He said he simply needed help.
"I just need, I need a hug and, you know, a warm cup of hot chocolate with some marshmallows in it," Eskelsen said during the 911 call.
Officers said Eskelsen admitted to using drugs daily. They said they found marijuana and a pipe in his backpack. Eskelsen also said he had a needle and a syringe, according to police.
Eskelsen was arrested on charges of criminal trespassing and improper use of 911.
Police stress that 911 should only be used for real emergencies.
