  • The best Mahler 8 finale on YouTube. I just sang in this in Los Angeles with the LA Phil and Simon Bolivar Orch. under Dudamel, and although I think we did a very good rendition, Lenny really gets it right. The sublime soprano is Judith Blegen I think.

  • @jglass54

Thanks for this documented comment, so rare.

  • Did anyone else notice that there's another Conductor at the rear of the Auditorium?

  • I don't understand very well what you want to say.

  • @ProfessorPiano

Bravo for your discovery of the hidden conductor, as at end of the Alfred Hitchcok's film at the Albert Hall.

But musically, what is the interest of your comment, mister Professor ?

  • @ProfessorPiano The choral conductor is always on hand to guide the chorus in such a large performance.

  • In ANY recorded video of bernstein's conducting, I always have a feeling that he's enjoying the music more than the musicians and the audience. He was the consummate music lover where he thrived on the stage, and everything else (ie the audience) was extraneous. It's infectious to watch.

  • @ProfessorPiano it was the assistant conductor conducting the offstage brass section.

  • To borrow a line from Wordsworth, Mahler faces his existential voidness "...not in entire nakedness/ but trailing clouds of glory does he sing to God who is his home..." And Bernstein. He, too, sings to God. Finally, it's the only music there is.

  • he made me cry. again!

  • @dtolbiac Now now, not everyone is a n° 8 connoisseur and aware of it's extra sections with conductors.

You know he just thinks he's discovered something special, no need to get condescending.

  • Who's the gorgeous and talented soprano? Forgive me for not knowing....

  • @dtolbiac Well, I just thought it was a good observation to point out. If I want to be really fussy; because of the use of two conductors, that might explain why the last note was a bit messy!
