It is the "unofficial" Australia national anthem.

So, okay, I acknowledge that voting in the poll for the National Song was voluntary but, at the time, it was brought into the public arena in the blink of an eye. Questioning others as to whether they voted, they came up with approximately the same reaction: not enough time to think it over or adequate satisfaction with the potential 'Anthems' offered.
What did we get? A trashy song not representative of our identity. Political interests always manifest in uninformed & snap decisions.

I may be prejudiced but, as an academic working as an editor for Wikipedia (which has improved over the last 2 years) I had to chortle over the entry for 'Advance Australia Fair':
"Lack of impact: Both the lyrics and melody of the official anthem have been criticised in some quarters as being dull and unendearing to the Australian people [...] Advance Australia Fair is so boring that the nation risks singing itself to sleep, with boring music and words [...]"

I don't know how long you've been around, tneuage, but if you have been for as many decades as I have, you'd know its significance. 'Advance Australia Fair' is just more ridiculous nationalism. 'Waltzing Matilda' embodies the true spirit of this nation.
Talk about havin' a lend! I reckon the government was havin' a lend when it told us AAF had won by a landslide. I certainly don't remember a vote!

Actually Waltzing Matilda IS the unofficial anthem of Australia, as I recall we were offered three choices in'73, God Save The Queen, Advance Australia Fair and God Bless Australia which went to the tune of Waltzing Matilda unfortunately Advance got the nod.
