Issued in Canada January 1972 on Yorkville 45038 and in the US on Kama Sutra 540.
Terry Black had been a teen idol in Canada, beginning with his smash record (in Canada - it tanked at #99 in the US) "Unless You Care" in 1964. By the time he was 22 in 1972, he had married 19-year-old Laurel Ward, whom he met while they both were performing in the Toronto cast of "Hair" in 1970. "Goin' Down (On The Road To L.A.)" was their first record as a duo. It was written by British tunesmiths Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway, who wrote dozens of hits for dozens of artists. They recorded it in London at George Martin's AIR Studios with Cook producing. Black & Ward recorded several more singles during the '70s, and both also spent time as members of Dr. Music.
Despite the amount of airplay this record received, it spent only one week at #99 in RPM, but managed to rise to #57 in the US on the Billboard Hot 100, still seventeen places short of the Top 40. I couldn't believe it, either!
Terry Black died of multiple sclerosis at age 60 in Kamloops, BC on June 28, 2009.
