Here's the Downeaster coming off the Mountain Branch onto the mainline at Mountain Junction in Portland. Train details: Amtrak train #686 westbound with NPCU #90213 in the lead, with a cafe car and three coaches, P42DC #170 pushing, two more coaches, and P42DC #67 also pushing.
@TommyBNSF - I've seen weirder ones than that! If you check out my other videos, look for the one with the title "Amtrak Downeaster #686 with an awesome consist - 10-13-2010" -- it's even weirder than this one.

That's the weirdest single level consist I've ever seen.

@MarkConductor775 - Both locomotives were online and MU'd. 170 was providing HEP, which is why it was louder than 67. After the train passed me and I stopped recording, the engineer gave it an extra notch or two and 67 definitely responded.

Seems like 170 was the only one under power.

@jph0917 - Most likely the extra cars and extra locomotive were going to Boston for servicing. They do this every now and then. Makes more sense to tack the equipment onto an existing train than to run it down to Boston all by itself. If you check out my other videos, you will see a few other Downeasters with extra cars and extra locomotives.

Wow, why the two extra cars and engine? The Downeasters I see going home at night have only 2 engines and 4 sometimes 5 cars.
