I've lost a lot of weight practicing mindfulness or conscious eating. It's a wonderful practice, a habit to be learned, just like eating unconsciously is a habit we learned. The health benefits are amazing, since your digestion is slowed down and we assimilate the nutrients by chewing slowly. If I really pay attention to how and what I'm eating, I will eat far less than if I just shovel it in the way I used to.
This advice didn't work for me at first. I'd see a big plate of food and trying to force myself to eat slowly made me feel like I was denying myself, and it actually made the act of eating unpleasant.
But! Then I started doing portion control. It worked as a kind of visualization. Seeing a small amount of food on my plate made me want to savor the small amount of food I had. I slowed down instinctively, without even realizing I was doing it.
