It was probably asking for trouble, planning to launch a new radio station on April Fools Day, but that is what they did. 1st April 1966 was set as the start date for Yorkshire's first and only offshore station. But fate intervened. Delayed first by the non-arrival of technical equipment from the States, the collapse of the aerial mast in a gale was even more serious and ensured that it would be weeks before the ship would be ready to start broadcasting. Finally, two months late, Radio 270 began test transmissions on 4th June 1966. At last, the north-east of England was about to experience the excitement of commercial pop radio.
Somewhere i think i have a spool tape recording of 270's final broadcast and sign off.If i find a reel 2 reel deck i'll upload it and post in responce.
